The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) is the federal regulation that requires the use of standard X12 transactions to report and inquire about health care services. If you use electronic transactions, the old version was 4010A1. The new version of the standards is called 5010. Effective January 1, 2012, you must implement HIPAA 5010. Important note: Given the complexities of the conversion, the enforcement date has been extended to March 31, 2012. This is not an extension of the effective date. This is an extension of the date when fines and penalties will be enforced.
